WAR 'I'm About Somebody'

Obscure funk/reggae crossover tune from WAR's first album for RCA released in 1982. The 'somebody' they sing about on this slow-burning low tempo juggernaut must be Dr. John AKA Mack Rebennack AKA 'The Night Tripper' surely? A Google search brings up nothing on this song. Any further interpretations warmly welcomed...

Tony Joe White 'I Want You'

Tony Joe White 'I Want You'

The 'Swamp Fox' Tony Joe White lays down some trademark yelps and driving swamp blues guitar on this track from his excellent second album 'Continued...' from 1969.

Tommy McLain 'Before I Grow Too Old'

Tommy McLain 'Before I Grow Too Old'

Strong birthday resolution song alert. Tommy McLain is a Louisiana legend and this cut features on the excellent compilation called 'Another Saturday Night' which serves as a good introductory primer to the swamp pop/cajun sound. Check out the amazing and beautifully shot documentary film 'Promised Land: A Swamp Pop Journey' directed by Matt Wilkinson. It tracks the formation of a swamp pop supergroup featuring McLain, C.C. Adcock, Warren Storm and other legends of the genre.

Ten Years After 'Let The Sky Fall'

Ten Years After 'Let The Sky Fall'

Just picked up a brilliant mix CD called 'Swamp Bait' yesterday by messrs Godsy & Zeus. If dirty, Southern bayou rock is your thing, get your skates on to secure a copy of it as there's only 200 for the world apparently. This song features on the mix, and despite being performed by white British rockers Ten Years After, fits right in with the fetid, murky feel of the CD. Check here for an earlier post featuring TYA performing a live blues.

Creedence Clearwater Revival 'Graveyard Train'

Creedence Clearwater Revival 'Graveyard Train'

Brothers Fogerty et al. come over all doom and gloom on this murky album ender from Bayou Country (1969). This swamp blues gives a chance for John Fogerty's voice to reach its rasping best, with the tempo lowered from the usual CCR repertoir. You get the sense that this train might barrel on indefinitely, tracks leading into the belly of the earth itself.
